The Beautiful Boy - Book | moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age
films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: (From the book introduction): Children's emotional
lives are hidden to most. They give up their identities only to those with a
talent for being; for living with sincerity, for welcoming each moment, for
listening. Will McBride is one of those talented photographers - his
collaboration with the subjects of his work, with the young boys he has
befriended, has resulted in one of the great extended photographic portraits of
male adolescence.
McBride has spent nearly forty
years seeking out children in the transition to adulthood, photographing
privileged his school students, boys scratching out their lives on the gritty
streets of Frankfurt, a fifteen-year-old Spanish bullfighter, and a modern
Siddhartha story in India.
In McBride's work, the child's
joy and sense of self is in tension with the strictures of the adult world and
with his own evolving sensuality. The boys in McBride's pictures fall in love,
seek comfort, display their bravado, suffer deeply, and play with unfettered
energy. Although born into a world of conflicting messages and expectations,
the young men coming of age in McBride's photographs are at ease in their bodies
and free of spirit.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
Because of the physical size of the book (10 x 12 x 3/4 inches), we could not
scan any photographs to show you as an example. However, we can tell you
confidently that this book, nearly 112 pages, is packed with glossy color and
black & white of artistic nude and clothed photos of boys of all ages. See
families posing together (including McBride's own wife and three boys), candids
of children at play and at work, and even a few shots of some of McBride's
bronze statues of boys that can still be seen today in Germany and Italy. Read
some poems and poetic descriptions of the photos written by McBride himself, and
fans of his work. Read letters from readers and McBride's fans, and a
flattering "afterward" written by William Simon. All photographs were taken by
Will McBride, no stranger to the controversial. This book is no longer in
active circulation (they aren't publishing anymore copies). So once they're
gone, they're gone and will be just as hard to find as the Show Me
sex-education book. We have a limited amount of Coming of Age in stock,
but more have been ordered. It's heavy, it's thick and the shipping can be
pricey, but the book is worth it!
