It's Cool (It's School)

Pardon my pun in the header, but I always found it fun to do a play on words.

The back to School pageant is like any other School function, the younger kids all make their mistakes and the older kids help them along. It is obvious that the younger kids enjoy their parents seeing them shine in such events, so it is hard not to relish the moment and recall our own, younger School days.

The boys meet up at the sauna where there are more smiles from them as they are obviously becoming more relaxed in front of the camera. You can see how comfortable the boys are around each other, not just because of their friendships but because of their comfort with naturism among others.

Anton, being one of my favorites, is perky as usual in this feature; though, he has settled down quite a bit and does not fidget as much as he did in his earlier films.

The naming game is interesting, if only to hear how many times the boys contest that a city or car had already been named, or that a village was not a city, or the other, typical, boy-style disagreements. It is this type of interaction that helps show us the personalities of the boys, and how comfortable they are around each other.

Watching them grow up is especially rewarding. Knowing that they remain healthy and safe, as well as being a continued part of Azov productions, is wonderful.

Gold nuggets

Like the fabled American �forty-niners� who in 1849 scrambled to dig up treasure in California, a familiar band of Ukrainian 49-ers deliver gold in this delightful video. First, however, there is some footage of a rather didactic ceremony which marks the opening day of School 49, which I thought provided an interesting snapshot of life in Ukraine. After the pageant Artem, Dima and Jaroslav, who are all wearing awesome-looking clothes, meet up at a rather funky tower that is painted pink and covered with graffiti (they are there only briefly, and I hope that Azov will return to this neat location in the future.) The boys then meet up with Anton and play some ping pong, after which they head to the sauna (where Dima trades places with Alexey). The boys really shine there, particularly in the early sauna scenes, as they play in the pool and just sit back and relax. The video does lose some of its vibe as the visit to the sauna progresses, but this is nonetheless a video which I would strongly recommend.

Same Routine, But Fun Nonetheless

I tend to agree with Lloyd in that the films is pretty much the same old routine. However, Anton does what he can to lighten up the sauna activities and interview. Artem is active as ever. Jaroslav still seems like he's trying to figure out what he's doing there. And Alexey is still his usual somewhat subdued self. I still give it a 10 as there are portions which make this film one of the better ones. I especially appreciated the relatively long (about 12 minutes) preview of the soon to be released "Cutting Room Floor." I hope there's more similarly long preview scenes in future releases.

49 is now my favorite number

This film is by far one of AZOV's best work. It starts with a field trip to the cast members old school
number 49. Outside the school is a ceremony welcoming the students to a new year start. This short
scene is highlighted by two interesting events to me. The first is when 6 or 7 older teen girls talk to
the gathering of parents, students and teachers about how to behave in class. What I found funny about
that scene was the mini skirts the girls were wearing. How short were the skirts? Well, about the girl in the
blue jean skirt, lets just say it is amazing the squirrel did not get out of the cage. :^) The other part of
the school scene I thought was fantastic was a student of about thirteen who did a performance that
was great. He ran around in a large circle with a microphone in one hand and the other arm stretched
out pretending to fly. With a wonderful smile he says Hi, My name is Karlson and has a nice talk
about his willingness to help others with school. It sure would be nice if Anton and Alexey would invite
Karlson to join them in their adventures. Karlson is just bursting with fun, personality and energy.
In the next scene we find Artem, Jaroslav and Dmitriy hanging out at what looks like to me to be a
100 year old fort made of bricks and concrete with a tower the boys can look out to see the town.
The whole massive structure is painted pink. Wow did Russia have a gay army long ago? Did that
gay army blow the hell out of the enemy? I know old joke but it was a old fort so it is ok.
Next it is off to the recreation center for ping pong. That is where the gang is joined by the coolest and
most hip teenager on planet earth, Anton. On the way to the sauna Dmitriy drops out and Alexey joins
the group.
There is much excitement at the sauna. Of course we all know that Anton never disappoints us with
his outstanding personality and winning smile. Jaroslav comes through for us too with his wonderful
display of comradeship. Alexey and Artem also add to the fun and friendship that shows all the way
through this wonderful DVD. Ten stars and highly recommended. Do not miss this one.
PS When this DVD ends ( at track 9 ) starts the extra long preview for the up coming dvd " The
Cutting Room Floor " In this preview we get to meet lots of new cast members both current and from
the past. Robert makes a rare appearance along with many others. This preview is worth the price of the
entire dvd to me. Great video and excellent value. When this film arrived at my home, Christmas came
early. Thank you AZOV for this great dvd and for all the new movies that are in the pipeline

It's Back to School

I was excited about this DVD, and was a little disappointed in it as well.
The first problem is the school pageant is very boring. It does look like a holdover from the Soviet Union days when they had a ceremony for everything. The children in it seem bored, along with the school's principal. I can guess he has a countdown to his retirement calendar in his office.
Anton, Dima, Jaroslav and Artem then head to a recreation center to play ping-pong. That is the most fun in this DVD. After that, Dima leaves and the others are joined by Alexey for a trip to the banya.
The same sauna, the same questions in the interview and the same activities with the same boys make this one a little repetitive. Their is a bright spot as the boys sing songs in it (both pop and other). The boys are enjoyable and relax in the sauna, but something fresh is needed to pep things up.
