Barnens ö (The Children's Island) (1980) | DVD
Barnens ö (The Children's Island) (1980) | DVD
Barnens o - Tomas Fryk, Anita Ekström - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.

SYNOPSIS: Soon to turn eleven Reine (Tomas Fryk) doesn't wish to grow up, he thinks puberty will make him a "swine," which is how he views the few men in his life. With his mother planning on being out of town while he is supposed to be at summer camp, Reine opts to ditch the train and stay home alone for the summer - with dire consequences.

EDITORIAL REVIEW: Barnens ö (The Children’s Island) is a gem if a little movie from those groundbreaking filmmakers in Sweden. It stars the young Tomas Fryk as Reine, a soon to be 11 year-old Swedish boy who thinks growing up is the worst thing in the world.  His outlook on humanity and growing up is a bleak and disturbing world.  His only interaction with adults is with his mother, who has very limited time for her son, and his mother’s boyfriend, Stig, man who doesn’t exactly fit the “positive male role model” category.  Reine's outlook on adulthood is almost as bleak as the era in which this film was shot. While he slowly makes his way into puberty, he keeps a daily audio journal of all the changes his body is going through.

In search of the perfect job, his mother (played by Anita Ekström) accepts a summer position at a hotel in the next town over.  She informs Reine that he must now spend the summer at a sleep-away camp, The Children’s Island. Reine instead decides to “miss” the bus to the camp, turn around, and march right back home where he will spend the rest of the summer once his mother leaves. One last ditch effort to enjoy his “remaining” days as a “pure” child.

Shocking (according to Western standards) and moving at times. Winner of Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Film at Sweden's Guldbagge Awards in 1981.  Director Kay Pollack was nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear at the 1981 Berlin International Film Festival.  Powerful story with strong acting seldom seen with coming of age films made in Hollywood. Fryk has no shame, and does a superb job considering what was required of him to make this film.

Barnens ö (The Children's Island) (1980) | DVD5 Cinematic artistry at its finest

Rick - 5/29/2009

“The Children’s Island” soars to levels of artistry rarely encountered in the medium of film. It is an exquisitely crafted work with stunning visual imagery, all centered on the beautiful Reine, a soon-to-be eleven-year-old with an existential dread of his impending puberty. While his mother is out of town, Reine (masterfully portrayed by Thomas Frykk) devises a plan to ditch the summer camp that he is supposed to be attending and experience living in Stockholm on his own instead. This is no mere Scandinavian fore-runner of “Home Alone,” though, and Reine spends his time pondering profound questions about love, life and death as he meets a series of quirky characters who help him discover his true nature. He is indeed philosophical beyond his years, and in this way, and in many others, there is a god-like quality to him. What kind of god he is, however, is one of the central questions of this film. He is initially posited as an angelic, Christ-like child who seeks purity and wishes to avoid the corruption that sexual maturity brings, but as he inevitably approaches the changes of puberty he morphs into the adolescent Eros of Greek mythology, a mischievous yet endearing scamp who exudes a raw sensuality in everything he does. A rich use of symbolism permeates this film, and this is incorporated, in almost literary fashion, into nearly every frame. This is, as some have stated below, the sort of film that one should see multiple times, as one is sure to find things that escaped notice earlier.

Barnens ö (The Children's Island) (1980) | DVD5 Wow

Movie View - 5/11/2009

I just got this movie in the mail today. As soon as I got it I put it in my DVD player. This movie fells like you are on the jury with Reine.

Barnens ö (The Children's Island) (1980) | DVD5 a wonderful challenge

jasbe - 4/10/2009

This film is ripe for film students and foreign film fans alike. And as suggested, you may need to see it more than once to take in the imagery and subtleties.
I watched it to reading the subtitles and a bit later to see the film. Warning though, this film is not for the mindless or casual movie goer but for those seeking to be challenged by the writer and director to witness something real and different.
I am surprised this film made it to my collection legally considering the massive fallout during its original release. As a former film student, I heard a lot about this and similar films but nothing about what the film is truly about. This may change with each viewing.
An absolute must for true foreign cinema fans and collectors. Surprising and enjoyable.

Barnens ö (The Children's Island) (1980) | DVD5 Worth Every Penny

A Boy Alone - 2/16/2009

The first time I watched this movie, I wasn't paying much attention to it, and found it to be so-so. But after some time had passed, I watched it again, and found it to be heavily-layered and complex. I have watched it many times since then and each time something new is revealed to me about the characters, themes, and meanings.

Though not overtly philosophical like "The Annunciation," this movie is very "deep." While on the surface it appears to be just a movie about an unsupervised pre-adolescent boy who is alone for the summer, there is a lot more to it that makes this movie much more satisfying and engaging--even challenging. It is a coming-of-age movie, but it is much more than that. Reine may be young, but he is wise beyond his years and has much to teach the adults in his world, as well as his adult viewers.

Highly recommended--even at this price.

Barnens ö (The Children's Island) (1980) | DVD5 Excellent!

Ron - 1/18/2009

It's an excellent film overall. Azov is not fibbing when they say Fryk has no shame as there are a number of scenes where he's fully exposed.
