Les Diables - Adele Haenel, Vincent Rottiers - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Grueling, intense, and brutal, Les Diables is a
hellish little film! The devils are 12-year-old Joseph and his sister Chloé, who
have spent their formative years in care. Joseph is angry, resourceful, and hard
beyond his years, but his sister is quiet, withdrawn, and autistic, making each
of their repeated escape attempts especially dangerous. Director Christophe
Ruggia delivers a searing portrait of childhood love on the run.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
The opening credits of the convincing and painful Les Diables are
accompanied by a plaintive song about children who "fly away." We see two
abandoned children, Chloé and Joseph, on their way to Marseilles, to a non
existent "home". They seem to have seen a lot more misery in the world than
should match their age, 15 and 12 respectively. The catatonic, silent Chloé is
protected with all his might by her younger brother, who is continuously
conscious of his sister's looming lapse. Tacking between well meaning adults and
disinterested authorities, Les Diables follows the urgent quest of
brother and sister for family, for a home that doesn't really exist. In the end,
the film, sustained by the young Haenel and Rottiers who have rightly been
praised for their powerful and intense performance, is largely a road movie
about growing up.
The two leads
received loads of accolades after this film was released in France, and
for very good reason. We have yet to see a young "Western" actor bring
such a convincing performance to the screen. This film is extremely
controversial, and ranks up there on our list of most controversial foreign
titles as well. The acting is powerful, the story is well written, the scenes
are truly amazing and shocking at times. This is a must see. No "Western"
film company would ever touch this subject, or film, with a 100 ft. pole.
