SYNOPSIS:  On the night before his marriage, a young man and his fiancée return to the castle where he grew up to find out why he is impotent. In flashbacks, it is shown that his aristocratic mother indulged in nearly every sexual perversion known to man: orgies, incest, and so on. He and his fiancée blow up the castle, and she helps him begin a more normal life.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:  REMASTERED AND SUBTITLED, with excellent picture quality!  Directed by Mai Zetterling, Nattlek is adapted from her own novel and the movie received sensational publicity at the time. The direct treatment of the subject matter - sex, birth and perversion - provoked something of an outcry from the press, who probably wouldn't bat an eyelid today. 

The jest of the story is the film's main character, Jan, as an adult is impotent and can't seem to satisfy his girlfriend. Together the young couple head back to the home in which Jan grew up. The story is then told through a series of lengthy flashbacks when Jan was 12-years-old. The secret of adult Jan's problems unfolds right before our eyes in one of these flashbacks.
