Girls Can't Swim - Isild Le Besco, Karen Alyx - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Teenagers Gwen and Lisa have always spent their summer
vacations together on the Brittany coast, but this summer is different. The
death of Lise's estranged father keeps her at home, leaving Gwen to explore her
budding sexuality with the local boys of the resort town. One day, Lise shows
up unexpectedly at Gwen's house, but their reunions is soon soured by Lise's
resentment of Gwen's newfound interest in the opposite sex. The days that
follow are filled with awkwardness and rage as the two girls reexamine their
friendship amid the strains of adolescence.
EDITORIAL REVIEW: The
first 1/3 of Girls Can't Swim focuses on Gwen and her family as
they spend the summer on the coast. Gwen meets Frédo,
a 15-year-old local boy and they fall madly in love. At the same time Gwen
anxiously awaits the frequent letters that her girlfriend Lise sends
her. Soon, Gwen becomes more interested in Frédo and their
escapades and it becomes increasingly difficult to hide the relationship from
her parents, and eventually Lise. The following 2/3 of the film focuses
on Lise, and her family back in Paris. Soon after Lise's
father passes away in a horrible car accident, Lise runs away and joins
Gwen at the resort. It becomes obvious that Gwen is confused
about her sexuality; she loves both Lise and Frédo, but that
doesn't sit well with Lise.
