Zmory - Tomasz Hudziec, Piotr Lysak - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring rare
coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Set just before WWI in Austrian
occupied Poland, Zmory (Nightmares) is the story of Mikolag Srebrny, a
rebellious, poetic-minded boy struggling to grow up in a society oppressed by
church and state.
We first meet
Mikolag at 12-years-old living in a suburb of Galizien with his father, a
retired school teacher. Already at such a young age Mikolaj is suffering from
nightmares, thanks in large part to the anti-sexual teachings of the Catholic
Church.
Mikolaj's
teachers consciously engage in many cruel acts, and the boy's only recourse is
in poetry. Later, as an idealistic teenager, Mikolaj is finally able to grow
beyond the emotionally cold upbringing from his ill mother, and do something to
throw off hiss oppressive rulers.
EDITORIAL REVIEW: Replace your old VHS copy that you couldn't understand with this remastered and
subtitled version. Zmory is a strange film about a boy's strange life
that's filled with sexual anxiety, cruelty and what direction to head when
you're being pulled in every different direction. The non-subtitled version got
tons of accolades when it was first released to a mainly English speaking
audience, so, we assume, those compliments will carry over to this version.
Enjoy your favorite meal in front of the TV with Zmory in your DVD
player!
