SYNOPSIS: 15-year-old Julien is captivated by a mysterious older woman. He quickly becomes obsessed with the woman and much to his pleasure she begins a slow process of seduction. Problems soon arise when it is discovered that she is actually a prostitute who normally caters to older, wealthy men. In the tradition of Private Lessons comes the French romantic comedy, The Pocket Lover (L'Amant de poche). Directed by Bernard Queysanne.

EDITORIAL REVIEW: Oh, the French! Leave it to them to make a movie about an intergenerational love affair between a boy and a much older woman (see Clement).  This movie shows us the story of the relationship and how it affects the boy, Julien. While we were watching this film, in typical "Western" fashion, we were surprised that at no time does anyone who finds out about the scandalous relationship make a big controversy about it! With the exception of Helena's boss Madeleine (the "Madam" who runs the whorehouse catering to the upper-class), no one is shocked by the love affair. In fact, even Madeleine warms up to Julien and tries to recruit him into the "trade". This film is classified as a comedy, and there is some funny content but nothing that will leave you laughing out loud. If you can get past the horribly cheesy and poorly done English language dubbing (a 14-year-old boy voicing the part of a 4-year-old for example), then it's a not-so-bad addition to your library of strange coming of age films! You may recognize Julien's schoolmate Martine (Eva Ionesco from Spielen wir Liebe).  She only plays a small role in The Pocket Lover...and keeps her clothes on in this film (sort of).
