Boys of St. Vincent, The (1992) | DVD
Boys of St. Vincent, The (1992) | DVD
The Boys of St. Vincent - Henry Czerny, Johnny Morina - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.

SYNOPSIS: Inside the walls of St. Vincent's Orphanage, young boys fall victim to sexual, physical and emotional abuse at the hands of their guardians. Henry Czerny gives a terrifying performance as Brother Lavin, the head of the orphanage who must juggle the teachings of the church with his own personal demons. The plight of the boys under his care remains a secret until the orphanage janitor and a local policeman speak out against the Brothers' appalling treatment of the orphans. During the ensuing investigation, the boys courageously testify against the Brothers. Fearing scandal, religious and civil authorities conspire to shut down the case and quietly transfer the accused Brothers to new postings. Fifteen years later, still unhealed, the victims go public with their ordeal. As the veil of secrecy is finally lifted, their story will shock the world.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:  Extremely graphic and sometimes hard to watch, this moving story was inspired by true events surrounding the Mount Cashel Orphanage physical and sexual abuse scandal that occurred in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The former boys only school was run by the Christian Brothers of Ireland in Canada (CBIC), or commonly referred to as the "Christian Brothers", and many of the clergy running the school were found guilty for these heinous crimes that occurred during the 1970's. More than 300 boys came forward alleging physical and sexual abuse at the hands of "The Brothers." Following the completion of the trial in the late 1980's and early 90's, The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in association with Canada's National Film Board produced "The Boys of St. Vincent", which told the story of a similar school run by a similar religious organization. Although the story and characters are fictional, The Boys of St. Vincent is rumored to be as close to reality as it gets. We present the DVD in its full, unedited release. Canada's most controversial and critically acclaimed film of the 1990's.

Boys of St. Vincent, The (1992) | DVD5 Well done and moving

jasobe - 3/5/2009

I did not feel any part of this production was over the top or over emphasized. This story was no different than many other productions on the subject before and since. Some of the acting was poor but not enough to reduce the impact of this film. The daring attempt to bring such dreadful events occurring in the churches involving our youth is much needed and sorely underplayed.
Yes, parts of this film are difficult to watch but no less necessary progression of the story. Not for the light hearted, hard core religious or anyone believing priests do no wrong, for though this is fictional, it depicts an age old truth about the clergy and our children.
A must for your collection

Boys of St. Vincent, The (1992) | DVD5 A Little Over The Top

flinty - 12/25/2008

I also enjoyed this film which was originally produced for Canadian television. While the movie is based on true events, it is a little heavy handed in its portrayal of Catholic priests in the orphanage. The huge cross the priests carry in their waste belts, looks like some kind of a weapon they wield to impose their will upon others, something I have never seen in any of the orders of priests I know. Still, their has been a lot of abusae by priest, not only in Canada, but also in Scotland, Ireland , America, Austrailia, and, yes, even India, not to mention Mexico, Central and South America, Spain, Italy, and France. Sexual frustration and lack of fulfillment does lead to aggression. Apparently, sexual child abuse of young boys is more common place than ever before imagined. In Russia, sexual abuse of minors runs rampant today due to the increased number of orphans since the collapse of the USSR, nor is the present government doing much to help the orphans, most of whom live on the streets, surviving as best they can. It is sad to see a city morgue in Saint Petersburg filled with the bodies of children who overdose on drugs, especially from glue sniffing, as reported by Russian television. Matters are no better in places like San Paulo, Brazil, where the police shoot street kids for stealing, with little or no impunity. Personally, I think this all makes for a bad mix for future generations to come,,,,,

EDITOR'S NOTE: Comparing Boys of St. Vincent to what you described is "a little over the top". But we support free speech, so you're entitled to have that opinion here.

Jay - 11/29/2008

A twisted look at life in a catholic orphanage. A very realistic depiction of abuse by the hands of a priest. Johnny Morina's best film, if you are a fan check out Kids of the Round Table or Salt Water Moose.
