The Boys of St. Vincent - Henry Czerny, Johnny Morina - DVD |
moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Inside the walls of St. Vincent's Orphanage, young boys
fall victim to sexual, physical and emotional abuse at the hands of their
guardians. Henry Czerny gives a terrifying performance as Brother Lavin, the
head of the orphanage who must juggle the teachings of the church with his own
personal demons. The plight of the boys under his care remains a secret until
the orphanage janitor and a local policeman speak out against the Brothers'
appalling treatment of the orphans. During the ensuing investigation, the boys
courageously testify against the Brothers. Fearing scandal, religious and civil
authorities conspire to shut down the case and quietly transfer the accused
Brothers to new postings. Fifteen years later, still unhealed, the victims go
public with their ordeal. As the veil of secrecy is finally lifted, their story
will shock the world.
EDITORIAL REVIEW: Extremely
graphic and sometimes hard to watch, this moving story was inspired by true
events surrounding the Mount Cashel Orphanage physical and sexual abuse
scandal that occurred in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The former
boys only school was run by the Christian Brothers of Ireland in Canada (CBIC),
or commonly referred to as the "Christian Brothers", and many of the
clergy running the school were found guilty for these heinous crimes that
occurred during the 1970's. More than 300 boys came forward alleging physical
and sexual abuse at the hands of "The Brothers." Following the completion of the
trial in the late 1980's and early 90's, The Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation in association with Canada's National Film Board produced
"The Boys of St. Vincent", which
told the story of a similar school run by a similar religious organization.
Although the story and characters are fictional, The Boys of St. Vincent
is rumored to be as close to reality as it gets. We present the DVD in its full,
unedited release. Canada's most controversial and critically acclaimed
film of the 1990's.
