The Blue Lagoon - Glenn Kohan, Elva Josephson - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: The lush beauty and splendor of a South Pacific
paradise is vividly captured in this version of Henry DeVere Stacpoole's 1903
novel. Two small children and a ship's cook survive a shipwreck and find safety
on an idyllic tropical island. Soon, however, the cook dies and the young boy
and girl are left on their own. Days become years and Emmeline and Richard make
a home for themselves surrounded by exotic creature and nature's beauty of
physical and emotional changes that come with adolescence. And as they begin to
mature, their childhood affections lead to a sensitive and more profound love
and the birth of a child. But will they ever see civilization again?
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
Filmed in tropical paradises like Jamaica (the actual
Blue Lagoon), Fiji and Turkey, this film has some great underwater
cinematography. Many critics of The Blue Lagoon thought the acting by
the main characters was atrocious and the whole film was just an excuse for a
lot of gratuitous nudity. But fans of the movie felt the acting was exactly the
way it should be; seeing as as how the young castaway's learning and social
activity essentially stopped the day they were shipwrecked....so they are
supposed to be ignorant! An interesting note is that the original release was
rated 'R' in the United States, but in Quebec (Canada) this film received a 'G'
rating (the complete uncut version), meaning ANYONE can see it no matter their
age (most Disney movies get a 'G' rating by comparison). Ahhh, the French!
