Return to Innocence (2001) | DVD
Return to Innocence - Andrew Martin, Richard Meese - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.

SYNOPSIS:  Tommy Jackson is a thirteen-year-old victim of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse who has been taken into custody by the Department of Social Services after his mother is arrested by the FBI for making pornographic videos of him and selling them on the internet.

Glen Erskine is the director and chief of staff of New Horizons, the group home and counseling center for abused boys where Tommy is placed. Glen is a gifted therapist with impeccable credentials who has an international reputation as one of the foremost scholars in the study of male adolescent sexuality.

At New Horizons, Tommy's young life finally seems to be coming together. But when the nature of the love he shares with one of his counselors is discovered and their relationship is destroyed, Tommy strikes back by accusing the man he believes responsible. With that accusation, the stage is set for a dark, disturbing, and yet poignant tale of love and sacrifice, commitment and betrayal, forgiveness and redemption--and a riveting inside look at the processes and agendas involved in the prosecution of a child sex abuse case.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:  Packed with extras including audio commentary by director Rocky Costanzo, interviews with the cast, and a look "behind the scenes." An independently produced and released feature shot entirely on video tape that hits you with direct raw emotion. A must own for collectors of coming of age films.

We once offered the "Collector's Edition" of this film, but that has been discontinued and replaced with this version.  There's some really cool special features (different from the original release) including:

° Returning to Innocence: a short featurette profiling and interviewing several of the actors 7 years since the original release.
° Behind the scene slideshow.
° RTI on the festival circuit.

Return to Innocence (2001) | DVD2 Guilty of Utter Lameness

Rick - 9/20/2009

This film takes on an important subject – the ordeal of one who is falsely accused of sexually abusing a minor, but it does not do the topic justice. Indeed, this is a remarkably bad film that is full of over-acted scenes and forced and unnatural-sounding dialogue. The characters are flat and ridiculous. The main character is the director of a home for abused boys whose residents include Tommy, a thirteen-year old who arrived at the home after his mother is arrested for making child pornography with him. The director is supposedly an expert on child sexual abuse, but he makes a number of decisions that belie a claim to any such expertise (such as deciding to hold meetings with the emotionally unstable Tommy in such obviously compromising locations as the boy’s bed and a school bathroom). After he is accused of molesting the boy he turns to his attorney friend for legal representation. The friend is not a criminal attorney (and he even says that he didn’t know that the sexual abuse of a minor was a felony, despite the fact that this is common knowledge among attorneys of all sorts, as well as much of the general public), but he agrees to take the case anyway. The film then devolves into a typical courtroom drama that, as such dramas typically do, proceeds in some alternative universe in which rules of evidence and legal procedure seem not to matter. Of course, there is a surprise witness and many spontaneous interruptions of the proceedings, including, finally, a recantation by Tommy. The young actor who plays Tommy is, it should be said, the best thing this film has going, but there are unfortunately far too many scenes in which he does not appear. The most exasperating thing about the film, however, is that it never actually examines the most provocative question that it raises, i.e. whether, as the main character has contended in his scholarly publications, a sexual relationship between a man and boy is not necessarily a form of abuse. In fact, it is not at all clear what type of sexual relationship between a man and boy the director would view favorably, as he even disapproves of the relatively benign, consensual activity that Tommy engaged in with one of his counselors, whom the film goes out of its way to depict as a highly competent and caring man. If you are extremely interested in the subject matter to the point that you feel you must see every film on the topic, by all means watch "Return to Innocence," but it is no great loss if you miss this one.

Return to Innocence (2001) | DVD5 Must see film

Best film i have seen in along time. I thought colour would have been better instead of B/W. I would recommend anybody who likes films like this to watch.

Return to Innocence (2001) | DVD4 DVD Easter Egg

Steve - 12/7/2008

On the collector's edition (which Azov used to sell) there was a DVD Easter Egg (see http://www.hiddendvdeastereggs.com/films/33647.html)

The current version shipped does not have this easter egg, but the clip has in fact been left on the disc but has not been linked from any menu page.

It is a 2'37" clip of audition footage of Joseph Ragusa who plays Peter Erskine in the film.

If you have software which can extract titles from a DVD (such as Pinnacle Studio) it can be imported from Title 3
