SYNOPSIS: After years of being home schooled by hippie parents, Emerson is enrolled at a public high school for the first time in his life. The intelligent, androgynous youth confounds his classmates and develops his first crush - on his male English teacher. Raised in a household of casual nudity and sexual openness, the precociously confident boy throws himself into this awakening of his heart with dangerous abandon. This is going to be a Whole New Thing...for everyone!

EDITORIAL REVIEW: Canadian filmmaking is known for its "in your face" approach to sensitive subjects. Without a big distributor (like Fox, Universal, etc.) filmmakers have been able to release films the way they want to; without interference from "conservative types" who have issues with subject matter. Canada, like many European countries, has always been a leader in allowing filmmakers to continually "push the envelope" and make movies that would otherwise never be made. This film, for example, is the story of a 13-year-old male student who falls in love with his teacher and attempts to seduce him into a sexual encounter in a sauna....and his parents don't seem to mind because they're hippies and are used to "free thinking and casual sex". Yes seriously. The filmmakers manage to create this little piece of Canadiana without offending too many people (we think); an excellent approach to a touchy subject. Whole New Thing is also sponsored by the Canadian government (they paid for some of the production costs). How many other countries would do that!?!  This is the Canadian version, that was available a full year before the US version was released on DVD.
