SYNOPSIS: Based on a short story by Yuri Nagibin.  A young 12-year-old girl is befriended by a boy who becomes her confidant in this sentimental children's story from the Soviet Union.  When she is harassed by bullies, she is disappointed because her young friend did not come to her rescue.  The boy does his best to rectify the situation but he is unsuccessful.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:  From what we're calling "Communist Classics" comes this CCCP sponsored 1964 gem about a chance encounter between a young girl and boy, and the friendship that ultimately transpires and flourishes through thick and thin.  This classic Commie film, shot in Lithuania when it was apart of the massive Soviet Empire, is full of beautiful cinematography by Jonas Gritsius (who unfortunately stopped shooting shortly after the break-up of the Soviet Union).  The scenery would be awe inspiring if it were color, but I have to admit that black and white does add a certain something to this movie that has suddenly spawned a cult following.  There isn't much dialog and the story is easy to follow thanks to the photography.  It's quite enjoyable to watch, and there is an "LOL" moment in there (for me anyway).  I nearly fell off my chair when the "Benny Hill theme" suddenly came bursting out of the speakers on my TV.  I thought it was a mistake or maybe some wires got crossed somewhere - that is until I saw the kids dancing to the music.  Too funny.  ROFLOL!
