Kabluey - Landon Henninger, Cameron Wofford - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: In this offbeat, hilarious comedy that proves life can
always get a little worse, Lisa Kudrow stars as Leslie, a struggling army wife
trying to balance work, two out-of-control kids, and a never-ending pile of
bills on her own. At her wit's end, she begrudgingly asks her out-of-work
brother-in-law, Salman, to move in and lend a hand until her husband comes home.
But if dealing with his two rowdy nephews isn't hard enough, Salman also takes a
part-time job as the faceless blue corporate mascot for a dying Internet
company. Between the boredom, the sweltering heat of his post, and the
unique challenges of his "uniform," life for Salman is a constant struggle to
maintain his sanity.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
"Offbeat" would certainly describe this movie. If you just look at the
cover of the DVD without reading the description, you'd think (like me) that is
movie has something to do with Aliens. Well it doesn't. It's the
story of Salman (played by Scott Prendergast - also the film's
director) a pathetic, goofy, somewhat aloof man with no job, no money, no place
to go and, really, no place in life. His brother is a National
Guardsman fighting in Iraq and his sister-in-law, Leslie (Lisa
Kudrow) is a secretary for BluNeXion, a former powerhouse high tech
company now forced to lease out office space in their building just to stay
afloat. Facing problems of her own, and figuring that her husband is not
coming home anytime soon, Leslie must go back to work - but who to leave
her two young sons with? Enter Salman, who's no more an adult than
the boys he charged with taking care of, and that becomes clearly evident after
just one day of babysitting that saw the boys eat nothing but junk food and run
around the neighborhood wearing nothing but a cape.
At her wit's end with both
Salman and her two energetic kids, Leslie tries to help Salman
by finding him a part-time job at BluNeXion with the hopes that he'll
just leave when he has enough money. Not knowing what "job" is in store
for him, Salman mopes his way to the office to meet with his new boss
(played brilliantly by Conchata Ferrell - best known for her role as
Ed Masry's receptionist in Erin Brockovich). The job?
Dress up as Kabluey, BluNeXion's mascot, and hand out flyers on a
deserted country road. Salman seems to take on a whole different
personality as Kabluey and he soon realizes that he can make some extra
cash by appearing at birthday parties and maybe even be a hero to his nephews -
including 10-year-old Cameron (who, by the way, is trying to kill him).
His whole life appears to change before his eyes all thanks to Kabluey.
But is all this change for the best?
Although rated PG-13, and the main
character is a big blue "stuffed animal", I wouldn't really say this is a kids
movie! There's a lot of sexual references and crude humor (including a
reference to the growing sexual culture of "plushies"). It's funny, but
not LOL funny. It's short enough to keep your attention, and the talented
cast can hold it together enough to make an enjoyable film. I was
expecting a film about Aliens but got this one instead! Still, not a bad
addition to our roster.
