En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD
En Tu Ausencia - Fransico Alfonsin, Gonzalo Sánchez Salas - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.

SYNOPSIS: 13-year-old Pablo is a quiet, lonely boy with a troubled past.  His only friend is Julia, a shameless 15-year-old girl who is more than willing to help Pablo with his transition from childhood to adolescence, and give him some advice on sex, love and life in general.  On a quiet country road just outside of the village, Pablo meets Paco, an oddly calm, well dressed stranger whose car just broke down.  Nevertheless, he seems more interested in the boy than fixing his problem.  At first Pablo maintains a cautious distance from the stranger, vaguely heeding his fellow villagers' advice to keep his distance.  However, the boy's subconscious quest to find understanding of his dark past and guilt makes him lose all of his protective layers.  He sees a new friend in Paco; someone he can open up to and feel valued by almost like a replacement father.  As Pablo's affection grows for the man, he is unknowingly and blindly being lead toward a tragedy that will scar him for life.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:  I think I can honestly say that En Tu Ausencia will be our best selling Feature film in 2009.  Not just because it's being released so close to 2009 and there's an entire year to gain in popularity, and not just because of it's controversial man/boy/boylove subject matter and content, but because this is a very genuine movie.  Hailed by critics for it's beautiful cinematography, amazing soundtrack, and an ending that makes you think (or perhaps want to watch again just to be sure), En Tu Ausencia is the absolute best Spanish film I've ever seen, and probably one of the best to ever come out of that country.  Mark my words, this movie will gain a vast following very quickly.  If you haven't heard of it until now, just wait a few months.  It's also a movie that appeals to a wide range of tastes - so you don't have to hide it when company comes over ;-)

The movie features a stellar performance by 13-year-old Spaniard Gonzalo Sánchez Salas (who apparently performed some of the musical soundtrack as well) as Pablo, the fatherless boy just yearning for attention - not just from a father figure, but anyone.  Enter Julia, (an unbelievable performance by 16-year-old Ana Tutor), who not only has an obvious crush on young Pablo, but is also his best friend.  It appears as if she has competition for Pablo's heart when he meets Paco (Fransico Alfonsin), a tall handsome stranger who comes to town seeking help with a broken car.  Going against what the townspeople are advising, Pablo forms a close bond with Paco, starting many rumors and much gossip.  But Paco has much more sinister "plans" for Pablo, and an agenda that everyone knew all along.  Everyone except for Pablo

If you don't have a tear in your eye after watching this one - then you're cold and heartless!  The soundtrack is wonderful, and truly a pity that you can't buy it anywhere.  The cinematography is nothing short of brilliant and the HD mastering of the footage is worth it (although this is NOT a Blu-Ray release - it should be - you can still see the quality is quite nice).

En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD5 A must see

Noah - 10/23/2009

An excellent low budget movie, brilliantly directed by Ivan Noel, whose main occupation is musician. He uses only two professional actors, but the cast is superb. This is a powerful film with an interesting plot and very good photography.
Highly recommended.

En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD5 Great movie

luka fa - 3/15/2009

One of the best movies I have even seen (and I try to watch all movies with boys). The photography is amazing, the boy is a great actor and the director was able to intercalate peaceful and stressful scenes the whole movie. I was shocked after the movie, made me anxious, I just couldn't stop thinking about Pablo and all the drama and suffering in his life. It took me a couple of days to digest all of that and calm down.
I wish we had more movies with Gonzalo (pablo), 15 y old now.

En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD4 very good

jason - 2/20/2009

This was an enjoyable movie. The color and picture quality were first rate. The cutaways are a little rough at times, especially in the action sequences, but overall editing and camera shots were well done.
The storyline forces us to discover the nature of Pablo's woes as the movie progresses. Again, well done. The director leads the viewer down one path only to surprise them at the end. The plot twist however was not well done as it seemed deliberate misleading as opposed to situational plotline. (the trailer was the most misleading)
Gonzalo Sánchez Salas was very convincing as Pablo and made me believe.
It was a bit disturbing how quickly Pablo took to the stranger and how far he was willing to go in just a few short days (don't read too much here, the DVD jacket tells much more) but is a major part of the plot and therefore the movie.
En Tu Ausencia is a good movie for foreign film lovers. It is a good movie for fans of the films sold here as well. If you primarily or like only the Azov films, avoid this one and others like it, otherwise add this to your collection.

En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD4 A Film Truly Worth Viewing

Red Wolf - 12/31/2008

(MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS) After watching this film I confess that I must watch it again, and soon, because I am currently lost completely with the ending! Perhaps after seeing it again I can understand what the director was trying to say. It was fairly easy to follow the plot development, and was predictable although I was surprised by the eventual discovery of Paco's plan, and the part Pablo's mom had in it as well. It was, at times, like I was witnessing events from my youth all over again.

The movie itself seemed more like watching home video, but the story was great, the music was superb, Pablo (Gonzalo Sánchez Salas) was fantastic, and you really feel his pain at the end. Hopefully this will not be the only film Gonzalo stars in.

En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD5 Theatrical Screening in the USA

En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD5 Excellent Film

flinty - 12/27/2008

I just received my copy of this film today, and although it is a low budget film with unknown actors, the plot, acting, and tone of this movie is very well done. I especially enjoyed the Spanish scenery; i.e., the flower, lakes, hills, and country side. along with the thirteen year old boy, who, in certain parts, was not really acting, but doing what comes naturally. The movie did not end the way I would have wanted it to end, but then, life is full of surprises.

En Tu Ausencia (In Your Absence) (2007) | DVD5 Another great Coming-of-Age out of Spain

Rocky 62 - 12/14/2008

Critic rated this film very high. That’s more pleasant if you consider under which difficult conditions the film was produced. Director Iván Noel sold his house to finance this film.
It’s amazingly as early this film has been released on DVD in North America. The film wasn’t in Cinema in Germany yet and I guess in any other Central European Country neither.
I read a review about that film which contains an interview with director Iván Noel. If you read this statement of Iván Noel what he said about his young main actor you can get a small impression of what you can expected of this film.
Iván Noel said: He (Gonzalo Sánchez Salas) didn't have any problems (and his parents neither) of nude scenes and masturbation, which in Spanish Coming-of-Age films are actually no big thing. Spain is still far away from the absurd repressions of the neighborhood countries.’
I guess he’s right if you think about films like ‘The Tit And The Moon’ or ‘No Pain No Gain’.
