7 Virgins - Juan José Ballesta, Iride Barroso - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Summer in a working-class neighborhood in the south of
Spain: Tano, a teenager currently serving a sentence in a juvenile reform
center, received a 48-hour pass to attend his brother's wedding. Together with
his best friend Richi, Tano plans to enjoy his pass to the limit, doing all the
things he normally can't: drinking, stealing, having sex, and hanging out with
his buddies.
By the end of this 48 hours however, Tano
witnesses the collapse of the things he has taken for granted in life: his
neighborhood, his family, his friends and loved-ones. More than just two days of
freedom, Tano's leave turns out to be a journey into maturity.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
I'm not exactly sure what it is about Picture This releases, but the
official synopsis they write for their movies is always embellished (I wrote
about this once - wondering if their writers actually watch the movie before
writing their synopsis). In 7 Virgins, sure Tano and his
buddies steal, have sex (not with each other - which is strange for a Picture
This release) and drink...but that's not the entire plot as it seems like it
is thanks to the description. Also,
couple that with the black and white "Parental Advisory" for explicit language
stamped right on the DVD artwork, and you begin to wonder if you're watching the
right movie! The "Parental Advisory" stamp is usually reserved only for
the most deserving, but not this time around. You'll hear worse coarse
language in more than 100 of the films on this website, and none of them sport
the warning. That aside, the
film is an energetic and delicate look at youth. Gloriously photographed,
director Alberto Rodriguez shows us a southern Spanish town in its washed
out beauty and the young actors provide a realistic story in a movie that will
possibly steal your heart. The film is powerful in all of its aspects.
There is a lot of energy here and the Latin music on the soundtrack enhances the
plot and keeps things moving. As our hero Tano (played by
Juan José Ballesta - you may remember him from his
extraordinary performance in Planta 4ª) searches
for integrity, the story moves to a very moving conclusion. The
audience moves right along with him. (written with
input from Amos Lassen)
