L.I.E. - Paul Franklin Dano, Bruce Altman - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring
rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Critically acclaimed as one of the top ten films of
2001, L.I.E. is an intense coming-of-age story full of surprises and suspense.
After his mother's recent death, 15-year-old Howie is headed down a dangerous
path. Neglected by his father, a shady contractor with little time for his son,
Howie begin ditching school and robbing local houses with his delinquent
friends.
One day Howie and his best
friend Gary, a con man searching for way to finance his escape to California,
break into the house of an old ex-Marine named Big John. After Big John
approaches Howie about the robbery, Howie discovers the alluring secret that
binds his friend and Big John.
When Gary suddenly skips town,
and Howie's father is busted by the FBI and taken to jail, Howie is suddenly
alone. Can Big John be the paternal figure that Howie needs, or will his
predatory instincts prevail?
EDITORIAL REVIEW: In
late 2000 the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) slapped
this film with the insulting and dreaded NC-17 rating. The production company,
Lot 47 Films, launched a campaign against the rating, and the MPAA's
right-winged approach to their out-dated system of rating movies. The campaign
failed and Lot 47 was forced to edit the film if they wanted a "better"
rating, and by nature a wider acceptance amongst theater owners. Eventually
L.I.E. received an "R" rating "for strong sexual content involving
teens, language and brief violence" and was screened in theaters all over the
world. Thanks to Freedom of Expression laws and DVDS, we offer the UNCUT
and unrated version for sale here!
Director Michael Cuesta
gives commentary (a DVD feature that is not available on the edited DVD version)
where he continually visits the man-boy love relationship scenarios and what
some of the "hype" and concern was about in many of the scenes.
