Oliver Twist (1948) - John Howard Davies, Anthony Newley - DVD |
moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Expressionistic noir photography suffuses David Lean's
Oliver Twist with a nightmarish quality, fitting its bleak, industrial
setting. In Dickens' classic tale, an orphan wends his way from cruel
apprenticeship to den of thieves in search of a true home.
EDITORIAL REVIEW: "Please
sir, I want some more.” There’s
something inherently beautiful about films made in the middle of the 20th
century: the really good ones stand the test of time and are never forgotten.
The simplicity in camera angles, shot composition, set design and acting is
something rarely seen, if at all, in modern films. As the old saying goes,
“Keep it simple, stupid!"
Criterion Collection has once again picked the crème of the crop and
remastered a Charles Dickens classic, the 1948 remake of Oliver Twist.
The very first appearance of Oliver Twist on film was in 1909; an 11
minute silent picture directed by famed English director J. Stuart
Blackton, who made over 200 movies before his death in 1941 at age 66. A
story that has been told at least 30 times over the last 100 years may get a
little dry, but like many Dickens classics, some are worth watching (or
reading) over and over again.
David Lean’s rendition of Oliver Twist tells the story of an
orphaned boy who runs away from the abusive workhouse he calls “home.” One day
he meets a pickpocket, known as The Artful Dodger, on the streets of
London. Dodger (played by Anthony Newly) takes Oliver
under his wing and introduces him to Fagin (wonderfully portrayed by
Sir Alec Guinness). Of course you all know what happens then so I won’t
bore you with the details, but I will recommend you pick this one up and see for
yourself.
