Lakki...The Boy Who Could Fly (1992) | DVD
Lakki...The Boy Who Could Fly - Anders Borchgrevink, Nina Gunke - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.

SYNOPSIS: Abused by his gym teacher and his mother's current boy friend, young Lakki can find no peace.  He cannot turn to his father as the man is distant and uncaring.  Instead the 14-year-old finds friends and harbor on the streets.  He gets himself in trouble at school, starts playing with drugs, and even tries to become a bully.  He has no direction and no one to guide him.  Even the friends he has made turn against him.  It is only when things turn to the worst, and his fantasies are at their height does the real world finally reach in and save him from a tumble into the abyss of drugs and prostitution.

Unlike the soft touch and sweet theme of Svan Wam's later film, Sebastian, Lakki is hard edged and gritty, a mirror for the face of the day's alienated urban youth

EDITORIAL REVIEW:  There is not much more we can say about this film that you don't already know.  A classic?  Fore sure!  Long awaited DVD release?  Absolutely!  Will you like it as much now as you did before?  No...you'll love it! Lakki is played by the blond-haired, blue-eyed Anders Borchgrevink, who never acted again!  Perhaps it was because when Lakki (the full original name) was first released in theaters in 1992, it was so poorly received that just five days later it was pulled, altered, and redistributed under a different name, Lakki: Gutten som kunne fly (The boy that could fly).  That didn't help much, but North American audiences, on the other hand, absolutely loved this film!  Unfortunately, American and Canadian movie lovers had to settle for watching it on video because Lakki never made it to theaters in North America Europe's loss is our gain, and this newly remastered, uncut version of the original Lakki is now available for the first time on DVD!  Replace your analog VHS version with the DVD and you won't be disappointed.

Lakki...The Boy Who Could Fly (1992) | DVD4 Teenage Angst, Nordic Style

Rick - 1/25/2009

This dark and surreal film could only come from Scandinavia, where existential agony (think Ingmar Bergman) and edgy coming-of-age stories (think “You Are Not Alone”) have long been part of Nordic cinema. Fourteen-year-old Lakki is bullied at school by his gym teacher, and his divorced mother adds insult to injury by dating the man. Lakki’s father is equally unable to give his mentally anguished son the emotional support he needs, so the boy seeks refuge elsewhere: on the streets, in drugs and in his mind, where he reminisces about the happier days of his earlier childhood and imagines (or hallucinates) that he is growing a pair of wings that will enable him to fly away from his problems. This is an arty film that illustrates the inner turmoil of a disturbed adolescent, and Anders Borchgrevink gives a captivating portrayal in the title role.
