SYNOPSIS: For most Russian orphans, the chance to be adopted is a
dream come true. But six-year-old Vanya Solntsev has other hopes.
After discovering his mother is still alive, the abandoned boy teaches himself
to read so as to learn her address from his personal files. Before a
wealthy Italian couple can claim him for their own, Vanya sets off on a perilous
journey to find his only remaining family. Pursued by orphanage staff and
the police, the determined runaway must now face the most difficult challenges
of his young life in this incredible story inspired by true events.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
The film starts off
with an Italian couple searching for a Russian boy to adopt. I don’t know what
is more sad, the state of the orphanage, or the look of anticipation of the boys
as they sit and wait to see who will be “picked” to be adopted…only to be turned
away in favor of another child being “showcased” for the prospective “buyers.”
This
heartwarming tale is the story of Vanya, your prototypical Russian orphan boy in
search of a life that can’t possibly get any worse. Today is the day he is
showcased for adoption. As his friends look on, following an afternoon of
quality time, the Italian couple agree to take Vanya but must first say goodbye
and wait two months for the paperwork to clear.
And
thus begins a film that will move you as you play witness to Vanya’s search for
his mother after learning she may still be alive. Not wanting to loose his
mother, for a second time, Vanya sets out to find her before the Italian couple
come back to take him away.
