Sweet Mud - Tomer Steinhof, Ronit Yudkevitz - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: On a kibbutz in southern Israel, 12-year-old Dvir must
endure grueling tests of manhood - but these trials pale in comparison with the
troubles brought on by his mother, Miri, whose sanity is quickly fading.
As the community ostracizes Miri, young Dvir begins to question the kibbuitz's
rigid, utopian rules in this episodic coming of age tale that won the Dramatic
World Cinema Prize at Sundance 2007.
EDITORIAL REVIEW: Roughly
translated from Hebrew, kibbutz means: gathering, together. A
kibbutz is
an Israeli collective community. In laymen's terms, "one giant family"
where the "family" is segregated. All the women live together, all the men
live together and all the children live together all inside one community
(usually guarded by armed men and barbed wire fences). They all work for the
better of the community, and within the community with very little or no outside
help.
Dvir, played by Tomer Steinhof, is
a part of this community where, right from birth, he is cared for by other
members of the kibbutz but never his own mother, and accepts this life-hand he has
been dealt. Dvir's mother, Miri, played by Ronit Yudkevitz, is a
little....well, "loopy" and has some issues about the kibbutz and
their strict rules When Miri
attempts to bring in an outsider, tempers flare and Dvir begins to think his
time on the kibbutz may soon come to an end sooner than he thought.
