Elvis Elvis - Lele Dorazio, Allan Edwall - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring
rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Elvis Karlsson is six years old. His mother loves
Elvis Presley; so much so, that she named her son after him. It's not easy
for young Elvis to live up to his mother's expectations.
Based on Maria Gripes' charming novel, and directed by award winning
director Kay Pollack, Elvis! Elvis! is a heart-warming tale for the whole family!
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
No matter how hard he tries, Elvis can't seem to live up to the pedestal
on which his mother has put him (how easy would it be for you to live up to
"The King"?). Elvis' father is even less warm and seems only
to tolerate his presence, but only just a little - or at least a little more
than Mother. Convinced that his mother thinks that he's not terribly
bright and will never have friends, Elvis' life just seems to be headed
in a downward spiral. You can't help but feel just a little sorry for
Elvis as he overhears his mother talking bad about him - one would call it "emotional
abuse" nowadays - it's no wonder the kids pees himself or gets teased at
school. With his self esteem at an all time low, Elvis often
travels to the one place he feels most comfortable - the train yard - to hang
out with Brovall, the caretaker of the yard. These frequent, but
often brief visits are enough to keep Elvis sane, but don't come frequent
enough. To take a break from his parents (a very much needed break), Elvis
runs away to the country to visit his grandparents. Perhaps it's the knowledge
that her son will start enjoying himself for once that drives Mother mad, but
upon hearing that Elvis has "escaped", she demands that Grandpa
bring Elvis home immediately. Elvis holds a special place in
his Grandparent's hearts, and they're only more then pleased to have him over
and give him the love and "parenting" he surely needs. But is this enough
to turn this boy around from what appears to be a path to nowhere - before his
inevitable return home?
Kay Pollack (Barnens
ö) directs this, his first feature. There's a lot of
Barnens ö in Elvis Elvis in that Pollack lets the actors act
without a lot of dialogue. The sign of a good actor and director (in my
opinion) is how they tell a story without dialogue. If they manage to get
their point across without having to explain it, verbally, then they've done
their job. In Elvis! Elvis!, and pretty much any movie not dialogue
heavy for that matter, the point is trying to get you to feel for the character
and understand WTF is going on (that's also the secret to enjoying a foreign
film that isn't subtitled). Elvis! Elvis! is no Oscar®
or BAFTA winner by any stretch, but for a movie carried on the back of a
child - a six-year-old (or 10 years old, depending on who you talk to) - it
really is quite good.
We've remastered Elvis!
Elvis!, with excellent picture quality and added new and improved optional
English subtitles (exclusive to azovfilms.com by the way).
