Times and Winds - Özkan Özen, Ali Bey Kayali - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Laying bare forbidden yearnings, dawning sexuality, and
oedipal rage, Times and Winds tells the story of three pre-adolescent friends
coming of age in a remote Turkish mountain village. Young teen Omer contemplates
the unthinkable as he bitterly struggles under the loveless emotional yoke of
his scornful Muslim cleric father. Yakup, Omer s best friend, obsesses over a
beautiful schoolteacher. Yildiz, recoils from burgeoning womanhood, and from the
sordid carnal realities she has grown too old to ignore. Blessed with painterly
wide-screen visuals, Estonian composer Arvo Part's sublime music score, and
phenomenally surefooted performances from an astonishingly adept young cast,
Times and Winds contrasts a parochial society s unending chain of cruelty with
the pagan natural world s eternal and sensual beauty.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
A wonderful film that will immediately suck you in with it's glorious musical
score and fantastic cinematography. There is not a lot of dialog so much
of the story of Times and Winds is told through the remarkable acting of
its young cast. If you have a widescreen TV you will appreciate the
scenery even more, and your home theatre sound system will enhance your
listening pleasure quite considerably (composed by Estonian, Arvo Part).
Özkan Özen plays Omer,
the emotionally abused and troubled boy who wishes his father dead. Ali
Bey Kayali plays Yakup, Omer's best buddy (not that there is
really much to choose from in this really tiny village) who is insanely in love
with the village's only teacher. You can say Omer is obsessed and
even refuses to wash his hands after he gets a little of her blood on his finger
when he helps his teacher with a foot injury (eww, kinda gross really - now that
is love!). Elit Iscan plays Yildiz, an adolescent
girl on the verge of adulthood forced into taking on more responsibility than
someone her age should be. Times and Winds is a definite keeper for
your coming of age film library, but it will best be appreciated by the true
foreign film buff.
