Ready? Ok! - Lurie Poston, Carrie Preston - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: In this poignant family comedy, single mom Andrea
struggles to understand her young son Josh. He's smart, happy and
enthusiastic - and he's also obsessed with dresses and dolls. And although
Andrea convinces him to join the school wrestling team, Josh's true heart's
desire is to be a cheerleader.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
This remarkably well done American indie flick (yikes, "remarkable" and
"American indie flick" in the same sentence - yes, I kid you not) stars
Lurie
Poston as Josh, a somewhat effeminate boy who's "trying to change the rules" at
his ultra conservative private catholic boys school so he can be a cheerleader.
Living in "Normal Heights" is anything but for young Josh as he prefers his
leisure activities like he prefers his clothes: frilly and feminine!
Mature well beyond his years, Josh is trying everything to get on the
cheerleading squad, including pointing out loopholes in the official school rule
book. His efforts seem to be in vain, though, as the school won't budge on
this issue. His mother, Andrea, is convinced that Josh is gay and without
Josh's father in the picture, takes it upon herself to "set him straight."
Thinking she's doing the right thing, Andrea ends up enrolling Josh
on the
wrestling team and as luck would have it, Josh grows an interest...in Mike,
the captain of the team. Regardless of Josh's interest in "his favorite
wrestler", his heart is still with cheerleading. Despite Andrea's attempts
to point Josh in the "right" direction, and her expectations of him,
Josh does
his own thing - innocently and without a care in the world about what other
people think. Will Josh's enthusiasm for life and Andrea's fear of the
truth find common ground and work together before the end credits role?
Short of actually saying Josh's
character is gay (perhaps because this is classified as a "family film") it
is pretty apparent, but not bash you over the head apparent (like let's say
The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros). No need to dust off your "gay-dar"
for this one! It's funny and true to form with indie films in that there
is no moral message (thank gowd).
If you don't recognize the name
Lurie Poston yet, you will shortly. He's already appeared in a few
Hollywood films: Walk Hard:
The Dewey Cox Story and Step Brothers with Will Farrell and John C. Reilly
and no doubt has a bright future ahead. Packing on a few pounds for his role in
Ready? Ok! (and judging by his new
headshot at
IMDB,
he's seen the benefits of a what a good diet does for teen idols), what makes
Lurie brilliant is not just the ability to capture his character's personality
with spot on precession, but the mere fact that he chose this role deserves my
kudos. It's doesn't take a genius to know that kids can be cruel, so you
can imagine the heat Lurie took at school after completing this movie.
