Little Devil - Joseph Friend, Robson Green - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: Ollie is only ten years old, but he
has already figured out that his parents’ marriage is falling apart and they are
trying to hide it from him. Racked with guilt that his own clumsy screw-ups make
matters worse, Ollie tries to be very good to keep his family together. When his
father and mother resort to upsetting arguments, excessive drinking and
hot-headed walkouts, Ollie decides that being really bad should do the trick to
restore his happy family.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
"Ollie, what's the one thing you're really looking forward to as an adult?"
asks Ollie's teacher. "Blow jobs in the car!" responds Ollie.
And so begins the British TV mini-series, turned two-plus hour DVD about
10-year-old Ollie and his life as he learns about what it's like being in
the middle of feuding parents. The marital problems start over some
indiscretions and now Ollie's parents are going to great lengths to hide
the issues from him while trying to patch things up with each other. The
"patching up of things" gets complicated when Ollie's father, Will
(played by Robson Green), seeks revenge - a little payback for his wife,
Maggie's affair. Things go downhill from there and Ollie's
father is forced to move out. Will's new found freedom (some may
call it a mid-life crises) sees him buy a motorcycle and slip back into a
comfortable pair of blue jeans because he doesn't need Maggie's approval.
With Ollie now completely deflated and upset that his parents have split
up, he and his best friend Zoe (played by Chloe O'Sullivan) devise a plan - a plan that comes together
with the realization that Ollie's parents seem to get along whenever he
does something bad.
Little Devil was
actually a mini-series made for British TV in 2006 and seamlessly made into a
"movie" by stringing together the episodes (hence the length). There's a
great thing about episodic television, whether it's a mini-series or an entire
13 (or more) episode season, and that is character development. Many
feature-length films lack the character and story development needed to garner
the kind of emotion that allows the viewer to grow with the movie and its
players. Typically, a movie lets you know within minutes where the
character stands and how the you're supposed to react and before you know it,
it's over. Do you love them, hate them, feel apathy towards them. etc?
A really good movie strings you along experiencing every emotion the characters
do; there is a little hate and a little love and respect for everyone and when
it's over there is a feeling of satisfaction, and yet emptiness that it is over.
And like a good series, Little Devil captures that and sucks you right
in. There's so many twists and turns and storylines that watching
Little Devil
may just be the best 131 minutes you spend all day.
