August Rush - Freddie Highmore, Robin Williams - DVD | moviebizz.com
featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.
SYNOPSIS: There's music in the wind and sky. Can you hear it?
And there's hope. Can you feel it? The boy called August Rush can. The music
mysteriously draws him, penniless and alone, to New York City in a quest to find
- somehow, someway - the parents separated from him years earlier. And along
the way he may also find the musical genius hidden within him.
EDITORIAL REVIEW:
Is it possible to say anything negative about Freddie Highmore? No. In
August Rush young Freddie plays orphan Even Taylor, turned
musical genius August Rush. Evan is a boy who refuses to be
placed with a foster family for fear that his real parents will soon find him.
He wanders away from the orphanage and "follows the music" to New York City.
Evan soon takes on the stage name of August Rush when Max
"Wizard" Wallace, played by Robin Williams, a slimy musician turned
manager for runaway kid-musicians, "discovers" his amazing, almost Mozart-like
talent. Evan has no interest in making money from his gift. His only
appeal is finding his birth parents and he uses his music as a clue.
This film is a little mellow
dramatic in spots, but Freddie Highmore fans will like this movie the
most. It's a chance to see him in a different, more adult role than you're used
to. He tries out an American accent in August Rush but doesn't
quite nail it to perfection, although it is pretty good. His speaking roles are
limited (perhaps because of his accent?) so he relies mostly on his acting
ability. And what would a Freddie Highmore film be without seeing those
big blue eyes well up with tears in a touching display of sensitivity? It just
makes your heart melt.
This film has a great
soundtrack and was nominated for an Oscar®.
And there's lots of extras on the DVD including some deleted scenes. Check them
out and you'll notice that had the director used them in the release print it
would have changed your opinions about some of the characters, and probably even
changed the story a bit.
