Joe the King (1999) | DVD
Joe the King (1999) | DVD
Joe the King - Noah Fleiss, Peter Tambakis - DVD | moviebizz.com featuring rare coming of age films from around the world.

SYNOPSIS: When the deck's stacked against you, it pays to keep a few aces up your sleeve.  Actor Frank Whaley makes his writing/directing debut with this unflinching, loosely auto-biographical look at Joe Henry, a sensitive but tough working class kid who struggles valiantly to survive the colossal road blocks fate has placed in his path.  The star-studded cast features Val Kilmer as Joe's drunken, abusive father, John Leguizamo as a cynical busboy at the local greasy spoon, Karen Young as Joe's burnt-out mother a and Ethan Hawke as his inept guidance councilor.  With shattering honesty and unforgettable characters, Joe the King will command a permanent place in your heart.

EDITORIAL REVIEW: I decided to add Joe the King to our library because some time ago we posed a poll question to our members.  Joe the King was featured prominently in the poll (specifically the nude scene with Peter Tambakis) and after 2 weeks, many responded that they had never seen the movie.  Which is quite surprising, considering the amount of star-power this film packs (at least at the time - which was the late 1990's) and its position in the realm of coming of age movies.  The named actors and content aside, what you have is a story that some can relate to and performances that are quite realistic - especially from the young cast.

Noah Fleiss plays Joe, a white-trash petty thief living a miserable life and surrounded by miserable people.  Joe's daily routine often revolves around avoiding his equally trashy parents while doing whatever he can to make a few bucks.  Joe works "under the table" at a greasy spoon, run by equally greasy people.  The bonus for Joe, though, is that the little money he makes he can spend on something other than food because working as a dishwasher in a restaurant allows you to eat all the table scraps you want.  Plus, he's found out a little secret about the owners of the greasy spoon which will ultimately be the cause of his hitting rock bottom.  Joe's circle of friends include his older brother Mike, who's shy and desperately trying hard to get out of this trashy lifestyle he's stuck in through no fault of his own.  There's Ray (portrayed by James Costa, who played a similar character in L.I.E.), who's sarcasm and whit seems to get him and those who hang around him in a lot of trouble.  And there's Jorge (played brilliantly by John Leguizamo), the suave busboy of the greasy spoon who looks out for Joe more like a big brother than a friend.  Along with a not-so-close group for so called friends, Joe the King essentially walks us through a few days in his life as he unknowingly leads himself to a crossroads.

The special features of the DVD include commentary by first time director Frank Whaley (you may not recognize the name, but the face you'll know - he's one of those actors where you say, "oh ya, I've seen him before").  The commentary (like most DVD commentary), gives us a little more insight into the filmmaking process and a lot about the character development of the young cast (makes sense, since Whaley is known more for his acting than directing).  For example, was the Peter Tambakis nude scene real or fake ;-) ?

Joe the King (1999) | DVD4 Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown

Rick - 3/22/2010

This is an exceptionally well-crafted coming of age story about a troubled working class boy in the 1970s. The title character is portrayed by two fine actors. Peter Tambakis plays the pre-teen version quite well. He is in the film only briefly, but appears in several key scenes at the beginning of the movie that are crucial to the formation of Joe’s character (including one in which he is teased by his classmates and spanked on his bare behind by a domineering teacher). For the bulk of the film Joe is portrayed as an adolescent by Noah Fleiss, who displays remarkable skill as an actor (he is particularly good at acting while silent). A number of other actors turn in fine supporting roles, including in particular Val Kilmer as the abusive alcoholic father (this is, I believe one of Val Kilmer’s finest performances).

Joe the King (1999) | DVD5 Joe the King - Rembering

Murdy - 1/30/2010

I just want to mention that in 2001 I was going through a hard time is school, involving being caught doing something and suspended for a whole year. Well about 2 months after this happened I saw this movie on the TV and it really affected me and I felt along with the movie. It help me though a hard time. Now everytime I watch it I feel both sad and relieved.

GREAT MOVIE!!!

Joe the King (1999) | DVD5 JOE THE KING - Realistic & Heartwarming

Danny - 1/12/2010

I purchased this based on the reviews and pictures I saw. About 2/3 through the film I found myself wondering 'where is this movie going' but I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. The dramatic and emotional final half hour of the film brings all parts of the film together. As the credits rolled I was crying, had knots in my stomach, and thought I would be sick. Then I did something I have never done before - as the DVD came to the Home Screen I hit play again and watched it for the second time complete.

The second time I understood the crux of this film. Here is a 14 year old boy born on the wrong side of the tracks to a totally dysfunctional family and is surrounded by dysfunctional friends, co-workers, and guidance counselor. Yet deep down he has the need to love and be loved but there is no-one there to either give or receive love. His family provides him little food or clothing and his shelter is merely a house, not a home. To just survive he works after school. He makes some bad choices but he has to exist in a world that is either 'eat or be eaten.' As the film winds down little acts of kindness emerge heading forward to the ending that will certainly stay with you long after the DVD has stopped. As stated on the DVD cover: "...Joe the King will command a permanent place in your heart"

Terrific acting by a score of talented professionals plus a group of close friends of the director as extras and bit players for this low budget independent film. NOAH FLEISS and VAL KILMER are outstanding.

I bought this film for all the wrong reasons but now it sits on my top shelf along side other classics I have. Yes THOSE PICTURES are in the film but you might get so engrossed with the film you won't notice them. You can't find a better way to spend $10. And yes, check out the director's commentary once you have watched the film complete and you'll learn a lot about how and why the film proceeds as it does, some very interesting facts.
